 Bonded labor, also known as debt bondage and peonage, occurs when people give themselves into slavery as security against a loan.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it will observe February 9 as Bonded Labor System Abolition Day. Tamil Nadu is the first state in the country to make such an announcement.
